Hanukkah on the Road: Practical Questions

"Hanukkah on the Road: Practical Questions" by Avi Rosen provides a scenario-based guide for observing Hanukkah while traveling. The book addresses the complexities of lighting Hanukkah candles when away from home, considering factors such as location, household arrangements, time zones, access to safe flame, and the ability to remain near the lights. It examines various situations including hotels, rental properties, family visits, university campuses, military installations, hospitals, cruises, flights, and road trips. The author emphasizes proactive planning over improvised solutions, outlining the relevant halakhic considerations, representative source positions, safety concerns, and institutional limitations pertinent to each case. The guide notes both Sephardic and Ashkenazi practices, as well as different household models.

This resource offers cautious treatment of modern applications like electric lights, video calls, proxy lighting, time-zone crossings, and public displays, acknowledging that no single solution fits all rabbinic authorities. While focusing on practical law, the book separates historical background, Midrash, and mystical symbolism from its primary subject. It advises travelers to seek evaluation from a competent rabbinic authority for their specific itinerary and constraints before practice, clarifying that the scenarios presented are not definitive Halakha. Printable planning sheets are included, covering itinerary details, sundown times, host information, permissions, necessary equipment, and emergency alternatives, aiding travelers in identifying decisions early to obtain qualified, situation-specific guidance.
