Hanukkah Law: Sephardic and Ashkenazi Traditions

"Hanukkah Law: Sephardic and Ashkenazi Traditions" by Avi Rosen offers a comparative examination of Hanukkah observances. The book addresses the common oversimplification of Hanukkah practices into "Sephardic versus Ashkenazi" categories, emphasizing the diverse legal histories, regional variations, and family customs within each broad designation. Rosen's approach traces specific positions through named rabbinic authorities, distinguishing this from cultural preferences. The work also incorporates the practices of Mizrahi communities, acknowledging that their traditions may not always fit neatly into a Sephardic/Ashkenazi binary.

This guide explores various aspects of Hanukkah law, including household lighting, individual participation, order of rituals, blessings, timing, synagogue customs, food traditions, work regulations, and interactions with Shabbat. It clarifies the distinction between Midrashic and Kabbalistic explanations and Halakha, and separates the Talmudic oil tradition from the historical narrative of the Books of Maccabees. The text identifies modern denominational policies explicitly. While presenting comparative tables of positions, the book cautions that such charts do not offer definitive Halakha for individual cases. Readers are provided with a framework for formulating respectful inquiries regarding lineage, local custom, personal circumstances, and rabbinic authority.
