Women in the Hanukkah Story
Ancient texts, Judith traditions, domestic practice, and women’s remembered agency
General HistoryAbout this book
In "Women in the Hanukkah Story," Eli Mercer explores the diverse ways women have been integrated into Hanukkah traditions and memory. This book examines named and unnamed figures from early narratives, the later association of Judith with the festival, and local customs related to women's roles and activities. Rather than consolidating these elements into a single origin story, the author investigates the emergence of each tradition, its genre, and the form of agency it conveys. The analysis includes close readings of women and violence in Second Maccabees, martyrdom accounts, the story of the mother and her seven sons, and the complex transmission of the Judith narrative, whose biblical setting predates the Maccabean revolt but was later linked to Hanukkah.
The book distinguishes historical claims from Midrashic interpretations and devotional retellings. Subsequent chapters utilize legal discussions, personal accounts, material culture, and oral histories to investigate lighting practices, labor customs, culinary traditions, educational roles, and public leadership across various Sephardic, Ashkenazic, Mizrahi, and American contexts. Distinct sources for the oil narrative, such as a Babylonian Talmud passage, Al HaNissim, and the Books of Maccabees, are identified for their differing emphases. Contemporary research efforts to recover overlooked voices are also discussed, alongside an acknowledgment of archival limitations. The resulting study broadens the festival's narrative without substituting one simplified heroic account with another.
