Kislev in the Teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe

"Kislev in the Teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe" by Benjamin Teller provides a thematic exploration of Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson's extensive discussions on Kislev and Hanukkah. The work draws upon numerous published talks, letters, and edited discourses to analyze key concepts such as increasing spiritual light, the importance of education, public menorah displays, the roles of women and children, the utilization of material technology, and the imperative to engage with fellow Jews. The author meticulously identifies the original occasions and publication histories of these teachings, distinguishing them from later compiled versions. Each teaching is presented as an aspect of Chabad-Lubavitch thought, rather than a universal Jewish perspective.

This volume clarifies how the Rebbe built upon earlier Chabad sources, including the legacy of Rabbi Shneur Zalman and the movement's observance of the nineteenth day of Kislev. It categorizes his Kabbalistic and Hasidic interpretations as mystical theology, distinct from practical Halakha, and addresses disputed legal or civic issues surrounding public displays in separate sections. Historical chapters delve into the reconstruction of the Maccabean revolt, the prayer Al HaNissim within its original context, and the Talmudic narrative concerning oil. The book also examines how Chabad emissaries implemented these ideas in American public life and how this shift was perceived by both supporters and critics. Readers gain insight into these influential teachings, understanding them within the specific context of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.
