About this book

In "Hanukkah: Between History and Tradition," Eli Mercer examines the relationship between historical accounts and religious memory concerning the Hanukkah festival. The book asserts that an either/or choice between documented history and sacred tradition is unnecessary when each source is understood within its own context. The initial section reconstructs the Hellenistic background, Seleucid policies, Jewish internal conflicts, the Maccabean uprising, and the rededication of the Temple, drawing upon ancient narratives, archaeological findings, and contemporary academic research. This part explains why historical conclusions are often provisional and why the Books of Maccabees should not be considered unbiased records.

The latter half of the book investigates religious remembrance. It analyzes how the *Al HaNissim* prayer reframes victory, how the Babylonian Talmud's rabbinic narrative about the oil frames the festival through a miraculous light, and how subsequent Midrashic, philosophical, and mystical interpretations add additional layers of meaning. These interpretations are not presented as historical documentation or practical Halakha. A comparative chapter illustrates how various communities have balanced military action, divine assistance, minority identity, and domestic observance across different eras. Examples from Sephardic, Ashkenazi, Mizrahi, and contemporary denominational practices are contextualized rather than merged into a single universal custom. Questions concluding each chapter guide readers in identifying genre, date, audience, and purpose, fostering a nuanced understanding of both historical circumstances and the ways generations have shaped tradition.
